Tapioca Products Uses for Animal Feeds

Tapioca roots contain edible carbohydrates which animals can consume. However, the roots also naturally contain hydrogen cyanide (HCN) which is toxic for human and animal consumption. Necessary steps such as peeling, drying, and heating are required to reduce the cyanide before uses.

Tapioca has been widely used for variety of animal feeds such as poultry, pig, and cattle feeds. Starch content in Tapioca products ranges from 45% (Tapioca Residue Pellets) to 65-68% (Tapioca Pellets and Tapioca Chips). Depending on nutrition requirements and commodity prices, substituting other carbohydrate materials (such as corn, rice, wheat, etc.) with tapioca can reduce costs effectively and still maintain animal’s growth.

Consumers with concerns regarding GMO plants can consider Tapioca as an alternative. Thailand’s Tapioca is non-GMO, meaning no genetical modification involved. For more information about Thailand Tapioca products, please watch this short video by Thailand’s Department of Foreign Trade:
